AMD announces new Ryzen 5000 series processors based on Zen 3 architecture

AMD just announced today its new Ryzen 5000 series processors for desktops, which are also the first chips based on its latest Zen 3 architecture. Four new models were announced today.

The first four new Ryzen 5000 models come as chips for the desktop PC, and they stretch from the $299 Ryzen 5 5600X up to the $799 Ryzen 9 5950X. Which starts at $299 and goes all the way up to $799. The new chips will be available on November 5th.

At best, AMD gives the new Ryzen 9 5950X, which has 16 cores and 32 threads. This new chip is capable of 3.4GHz base clock and 4.9GHz boost clock. AMD claims the 5950X has the highest single and multi-threaded performance of any mainstream desktop CPU. The CPU also has a massive 64MB of L3 cache. It has a TDP of 105W.

AMD says Zen 3 features a grounds-up rethinking of the architecture that finally allows it to take the 1080p gaming performance lead from Intel. Paired with a 19% boost to instructions per cycle (IPC) and peak boost speeds of up to 4.9 GHz, along with a complete redesign of the chip layout and a higher max boost speed.

Here's the Zen 3 Ryzen 5000 processors that AMD has announced

Ryzen 5 5600X$2996 / 123.7 / 4.6 GHz65W32MB (2x16)

Notably, each of those chips has gotten a $50 price increase compared to the original prices of the comparable Zen 2 CPUs from 2019.

AMD is giving huge shock on Intel with the new lineup, particularly the company’s Core i9-10900K model, which Intel has previously demanded “the world’s fastest gaming processor.” While AMD’s chips don’t beat Intel 10th Gen chips on sheer clock speed — Intel’s top chip maxes out at a boosted 5.3GHz, while the Ryzen 5950X (AMD’s fastest new chip) tops out at 4.9GHz — AMD does offer other advantages, like improved power efficiency and a higher core and thread count.

Intel is stuck with its Comet Lake chips for five long months to try to fend off the Ryzen 5000 lineup until Rocket Lake arrives early in 2021, which doesn't bode well.

As odd as it sounds, Intel may have one hidden advantage — pricing. AMD now positions Ryzen as the premium brand and says it has the benchmarks to prove it.

This also means that AMD is once again competing with itself, as previous generation parts are now much cheaper and may seem more attractive to some buyers, especially those on older motherboards. but they saw the difference between Ryzen 9 3900XT and Ryzen 9 5900X.
